A Learning Management System can certainly find inspiration from online courses made for children. It’s high time that LMS developers start looking at online courses meant for kids and teenagers.
The feature that has to be first adopted from online course for kids is the way they interact with the user. Such features of online courses are being incorporated in normal, personal courses.
The Virtual High School programme which is based in Massachusetts is a wonderful example for such a training method. There are nearly 12,000 online students just in this semester.
What makes programmes like VHS successful? They cater to the real needs of their users, i.e. secondary school students. The online programme of VHS has been of great use to schools that can’t afford to offer certain advanced courses. Advanced courses such as AP and computer science cannot be offered by small schools.
An advantage of LMS modules is that they satisfy both the schools’ needs as well as the students’ interests. Students are able to go through lessons meant for college students through the online courses of VHS. Some of the interesting topics include zoology, criminology and American multiculturalism.
Online programmes are gaining popularity throughout the globe, of late. Still there is no doubt in the fact that the word self-paced will never be received well. The primary reason behind this is the thought that this kind of a course would make the trainee lazy. But this notion has been thwarted by most of the LMS as it provides an easy-to-learn option for students. There is no need for constant supervision of the student under this kind of a course module.
This need for innovative teaching methods is fulfilled by online courses. The success of teaching methods such as Montessori and Waldorf has pushed most of the schools to redefine their methodology. This teaching method is fuelled by the students’ interest to learn new things.
This phenomenon is explained in a book, ‘The Montessori Way’ written by Tim Seldin and Paul Eppstein. They say that the dreams students have in life makes them strive to learn new things in life. People will have to become aware of many different things when they mature from a child to an adult. Irrespective of the method chosen by people this only means that people are curious to learn new things.
But still a person has to be motivated and asked to meet deadlines in order to surge ahead. The standard of the student has to be maintained consistently throughout. This proves that tests, quizzes, assignments and projects can never be taken off the learning process. The age of the learner does not have a say upon this.
Online courses have to be utilized to the maximum extent and not brushed aside just as a supplementary thing. An online course is said to be good only when it benefits the learner greatly. In a nutshell, an online course is said to be effective only when the learning needs of its users are completely satisfied, and best done with a learning management system.
