Beating Age Discrimination in The Workplace

People are working to a much older age than ever before as populations are growing older and states find it difficult to come up with the money to provide enough pensions. Yet, at the same time, older people are not always welcomed back into the work force. If you are looking for a career change over the age of 40, people have reported a negative reaction from employers to this.

There are things that you can do which rely on experience which can only be gained through age which will make you a more attractive candidate during a job hunt.

Make sure to tailor your new CV to the job you are applying for. Think about the skills you have gained throughout life and how these apply to the skills asked for in the job specification. Age and experience go hand in hand so you should come up with enough examples. Today’s workplace demands skills like communication and time management, these are skills which you are sure to have picked up if you have looked after children, so don’t panic that you have no professional attributes.

It is not necessary to put personal information on your CV, it is illegal for an employer to ask your age during the recruitment process. Leave your date of birth of your CV but if you really want to include it you could put it at the very end.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that they will get job satisfaction in one place, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Write down all of the skills that you want to use or learn on your new job and what activities give you job satisfaction. Then consider the possibility of becoming someone who has more than one occupation. You could freelance in your original industry for a couple of days a week and then do something totally different the rest of the time. You could teach or run workshops in one of the skills you have developed. It does not have to be related to your work but could be a hobby you enjoy or a health related course like meditation. You might find yourself to be a bit of an expert at something which you have done all of your life.

If you are prepared to look beyond the conventional 9-5 job, you will find that there are many opportunities open to you, regardless of your age.
