Business Change Management: Understanding The Effect Of Management Support In Business Change

January 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Regardless of the monetary issues of the world, businesses must undergo change. Yet, even though most change initiatives begin with a lot of enthusiasm, they tend to lose steam over the long haul. In this situation, the best way to go through business change smoothly is to acquire executive backing. Although executive support may be a vague term.

What happens, generally, is that a business change proposition is made. Top management give it approval and an executive is placed “in charge” of the project. That assigned executive will be the one to distribute appropriate funds, designate a manager for the project and then signs off the deal. When this happens, the bosses already know that the project has the support it needs.

From the perspective of the business change team, considerably more support than funds and approval are required. As with a lot of other projects, there are so many factors to take into consideration. These issues need to be straightened out and usually warrant the involvement of the higher management. In practical terms, though, this kind of support is often sporadic or non-existent.

This is often the case because the management is concerned with two important things: There is the need to change the business to keep it competitive in the future. Then there’s also the need to run the business now because it’s a must to keep the profits rolling. Unless somebody is doing something to address the issue, running the business is often more important than business change.

Problems in running the business are immediate. Customer complaints should be dealt with right now. The details surrounding running the business are pressing and hard to ignore. Even so, for business change to occur successfully, the bosses should be able to balance everything out; they should be able to give support without compromising the current needs of the business.

An excellent way for a business to achieve this is by hiring an exec whose job is to focus only on change. He can deal with change endeavors and efficiently resolve issues without having to worry about running the business. Aside from that, this person will also collaborate with the executive team and help make business change a priority.
