China Continues to Damage the Wholesale Framed Art Business in America

Have you seen the cost of framed art plummeting? Not surprisingly, the Chinese have marked their start the wholesale framed art business, much to the disappointment of American art producers.

Although some art isauthentically manufactured in China, there are unfortunately a number of factories in China knowingly producing counterfeits prints, oil paintings, and other framed art. China entered the fine art market very quietly. The wholesale art produced in China could be found in hotel meeting rooms and the dealers traveled city to city offering scant supplies on oil paintings and other framed art. Now, almost every art dealer now sells Chinese assembly line produced fine art. The Chinese can produce the wholesale framed prints at a reduced price than the American companies, and the quality is hard to beat.

Today, consumers also have access to Chinese manufactured art everywhere that is bought and sold. Mall galleries, big box stores, and even mass merchandisers are buying wholesale framed art, wholesale prints, and even such things as glass etching art to sell to American consumers at discounted prices. Art galleries that once specialized in fine art are finding it necessary to sell large coagulated fine art combined with original fine art just to stay in business.

Artists and manufacturers in this day and age must envision that the market is not what it was twenty years ago. Cash-strapped consumers are mostly not bothered about the origins of their framed art. For well under one hundred dollars, consumers can buy large framed art that looks just as impressive as their more expensive counterparts found in galleries. There is even a special place in China that specializes in reproducing one-of-a-kind artworks. It’s known as Dafen Art Village, located in southern China. Over six thousand resident artists paint reproductions, family portraits, and everything priced between a few dollars to a few hundred dollars per painting. You can even mail them a picture of your favorite painting, and they’ll reproduce it for you in any size you select, all while promising your satisfaction.

Adversely, there have been many problems involving the import of Chinese artwork. There have been incidents of Chinese manufactured counterfeit art being sold at American art shows. In one case, Thomas Arvid, a famous painter of wine was successfully able to acquire the US Marshall’s office to remove 146 counterfeits from a gallery in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, most incidents go concealed as the unsuspecting public continues to buy counterfeits unbeknownst to them. Some blame the global economy. It’s become a huge problem for American printers and artists to compete in this global market. The policing of galleries and art shows worldwide is an insurmountable task.

No doubt, the Chinese can produce wholesale framed art less expensively than ever. As the technology for image reproduction reaches finesse, the production of art becomes less of an art and more of a technological process.
