The Desert Schools Federal Credit Union is a financial institution that serves the state of Arizona. It has over 60 branches around the state and offers personal services such as home loans, savings accounts, auto loans, credit cards, insurance, investment and retirement plans, school loans and even loans for building pools and purchasing recreational vehicles. People who deposit money into banks do not own them, but people who put their money into credit unions are the owners. This means that with banks the profits go to the investors and stock holders while the credit unions are non profit. Credit union profits are reinvested into the business in the form of lower interest rates on loans and higher dividends on investments. Federal credit unions do contribute to FDIC insurance, meaning all deposits are covered.
People enjoy personalized service that the credit unions offer. Credit unions are generally involved with some business or organization. Teachers, for example, began the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union in order to invest their money as a group. This history will be explored further later in this article. At the end of World War II it boasted $9,000 in assets with 225 members. In 1947 the first employee was hired. She was a part-time employee whose office was tiny. She had little more than a 10 key calculator. The credit Union had over $1.3 billion in assets and 200,000 members in 1999.
