An Italian dictionary isn’t just a book about famous Italians. In the modern world it can be a dictionary in the Italian language, or a translator from Italian to other languages.

There are web sites with an Italian dictionary. Remember that Italian only has 21 letters – J, K, W, X and Y are missing. Italian words won’t include those letters.

The Italian dictionary contains these words – let’s look. Under a there is abate, meaning an abbot. It’s isn’t a comedian who wonders who’s on first, it’s the leader of a monastery. Christianity and many other religions use the term. The title can also be given to a clergyman who is not necessarily the head of the monastery.

Another word in the Italian dictionary is antarctico. That’s Antarctic in English. This is the Earth’s southernmost continent. It’s on the South Pole. The Greek word from which it comes means opposite of the north. That’s interesting.

In 1959 12 nations ratified an Antarctic treaty. 46 countries currently adhere to it. The treaty prohibits military action in the Antarctic. It also prohibits mineral mining. The treaty supports science and protects the ecology. 4000 scientists work there. That’s an encyclopedic description.

Mafia isn’t found inside an Italian dictionary. Malavita is in there. It means underworld. The Italian Mafia is also known as the Cosa Nostra. It’s a secret society with roots in Sicily. Its development was sometime in the mid-19th century. Italians brought the society with them to New York and the USA. The term mafia in America is used to refer to all Italian organized crime, rather than just Sicilian.

An Italian dictionary contains autoritratto. In English that’s self portrait. The root auto is included – it means own self. Thus an automobile is something that moves on its own.
