Trying to penetrate the jobs market has never been harder. Even the very best candidates have to get out there and compete. And some people who are doing it often enough, now know tips and techniques to be effective in their job search.
Before, it’s not unusual for people to work for only one company until they retire, but not anymore. Average tenure now is less than four years.

To be able to secure a job, you would have to compete too. Being a good candidate is not nearly enough; for candidates to be successful, they must get noticed before they can ever hope to get offers.
That’s why letters of recommendation are more important now in the job search process than ever before – often more important than your resume. If you’ve ever been involved in hiring, then you know it doesn’t take long before all those resumes start sounding alike.
That’s not the case with letters of recommendation. Hard-hitting, objective opinions from real-life professionals that have actually worked with you say more about you as a worker to a prospective employer… with the right letter, that is.
People are often reluctant to write letters of recommendation – even when you are more than deserving. A typical excuse people have is that they are too busy. After all, to write a good letter with an impact, a person will have to spend some time learning about the position you are applying for and the organization that is offering it.
A more common – and more embarrassing – reason managers are reluctant to write reference letters is that they don’t think they can do a good job. In fact, they fear that a letter they write will be so bad that it will make them look unprofessional, and you and the person receiving your letter will lose respect for them and the organizations they represent.
Whatever excuse they have, they wouldn’t tell you that of course.
Is there some kind of secret to this?
Clearly, though, some people have figured this out. How are they able to do it? Are they better or smarter than everyone else?
In lots of cases, the answer is pretty simple: More often than not, they’re not really better than you are, they just know the secret and they’re using it to their advantage.
