Job hunters spend a lot of time writing their resumes. They should; resumes are very important. Although in reality, resumes are not the most valuable tool you can have. Why is that?

Picture yourself as someone who is evaluating candidates for a lucrative position in a company. Normally, you would be looking at hundreds of resumes.

You’ll probably be looking at piles of resumes, trying to decide who should get one of fifteen openings. Your first job is to whittle some of this bulk down.

The vast majority of people who are in the pile will only submit a resume and a cover sheet. Most of these cover sheets aren’t really worthy of attention. You’ll throw these out immediately.

Maybe you’ll only want resumes that are one page in length. You’ll pitch at least those that go on to three or more. Most probably, you’ll also throw away those that are distracting to the eyes, like large fonts, unorganized formats, and inappropriate colors. Then you will focus your attention to the remaining resumes.

Do you see how it works now? You’ve culled out deviants. In the first round, if your resume gets noticed, it gets tossed.

Though you’ve survived the first round, the resume pile is still stacked up high. It would be great for your resume to stand out a bit from this crowd, but you won’t reach this point in the process if it does.

That is why recommendation letters are a great help: they will be your assurance that your resume will get noticed in a good way and not get tossed out!
