Numerous battles were fought throughout the Civil War’s four years of conflict, out of which came 600,000 casualties. Out of the approximately 10,000 battles that took place, a handful are considered the most important.
- Vicksburg: This Mississippi battle turned complete control of the Mississippi over to the Union and was considered most crippling blow to the Confederacy. Modern day Vicksburg is considered to have the most monuments of any Civil War battlefield in the United States.
- Chancellorsville: This Virginia battle was fought on terrain considered some of the most difficult for both the Confederacy and the Union. The Confederate Army was considered victorious after fighting against the Union, which doubled its size.
- Fort Donelson: Considered one of the first Union victories, the Confederates fought in the battle to open roads to safety and avoid losing troops to starvation. This battle took place in Tennessee.
- Palmito and Last Battle: Considered the true last battle of the Civil War, Palmito Ranch took place after a “gentlemen’s agreement” to end the war. The war was considered officially over, however fighting continued in this small battle. This particular battle had no impact on the aforementioned agreement and is designated by a small monument on the boarder of Texas and Mexico.
And there are more….
Bull Run: Taking place in three phases, this Virginia battle taught leaders their shortcomings and inadequacies when fighting. The Union claimed victory over the Confederates.
Shiloh: This battle caused military leaders to realize the Civil War would not reach a quick end. Taking place in Hardin County, Tennessee, this battle was considered a victory for the North.
Antietam: Over 12 hours of combat took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle was considered the bloodiest day in all of American history. Neither the Union nor Confederates were considered influential in the battle’s outcome. The North was praised for its tactical victory.
All battles were fought as a result of a dispute between the Union and Confederate armies in regard to slavery. War began after President Lincoln could not bring the two sides together. As a result of the Civil War, slaves were freed and cotton farmers were forced to pay taxation of 12%. The Civil War had the highest human cost of any war on American soil.
