People are working to a much older age than ever before as populations are growing older and states find it difficult to come up with the money to provide enough pensions. Yet, at the same time, older people are not always welcomed back into the work force. If you are looking for a career change over the age of 40, people have reported a negative reaction from employers to this.
There are things that you can do which rely on experience which can only be gained through age which will make you a more attractive candidate during a job hunt.
When writing your CV be sure to target it for the job in question. Think about the skills you have gained throughout life and how these apply to the skills asked for in the job specification. Age and experience go hand in hand so you should come up with enough examples. Don’t worry if you are returning to work after bringing up children as soft skills, such as communication, time management and the ability to meet deadlines are crucial in the workplace today and all of those will be skills you have developed as a parent.
You are not legally obliged to state your age on your CV and an employer is breaking the law if they demand that you tell them. You should either leave out your date of birth completely or put it at the end if you really want to include it.
You might think that you can only be happy in a job in a particular industry, however this is unlikely to be the case. So make a list of all the skills you’d like to use or learn at work and what gives you job satisfaction. You might find that you would be happiest doing a variety of things. You might, for example, work as a freelance in your existing career for two or three days a week and set up a small business doing something completely different during the rest of the week. You could start a class teaching a skill you have mastered to others. You could teach anything from a hobby to a fitness class, it doesn’t have to be related to your work. You might find yourself to be a bit of an expert at something which you have done all of your life.
If you are willing to do something more than your average 9-5, you can make the things you enjoy into a profitable career.
