Competition is fierce, that’s why you have to make sure that the papers and credentials you use for your job application will stand out from the rest of the competition. A resume is not enough, you need to get yourself a letter of recommendation as well. The thing that makes letters of recommendation so powerful is that they are different from all the generic-looking resumes that most candidates rely on.
It’s true. But getting noticed is not enough, you have to make sure your letter gets read.
The thing is: you have to ensure that it doesn’t end there. Smart candidates know the application process is like dropping bread crumbs to coax the recipient down the path to hiring you. Your application should get noticed, first of all, then the recipient should be able to read it, then it should get you an interview.
You have to realize that your portfolio, which includes your resume and cover letter, are just tools to get you to the first interview. None of these can actually get you hired. A great application package can only get you the interview. The rest is up to you!

The secret is: know what they need. If you’re not sure what they’re looking for, do some research and find out what you can before applying. The more you know, the more you can adjust, and you’ll have better chances of getting the job more than the others. And also, it will keep you from getting a job that you know is not a nice fit for you.
