Recommendation Letter: Writing A Good Letter Of Recommendation That Will Get You The Job You Want

January 30th, 2009 · No Comments

If lots of bosses lack confidence in their ability to write letters of recommendation that reflect well on them, then maybe you do too. With recommendation letters, there’s a lot at stake, so it’s just normal that you might be concerned.

Your recommendation letter must not only be refined, it should also be convincing. Beautiful letters that don’t sell are worthless to you. You have to do your homework so you could pass your first interview with flying colors.

Here’s one thing that is a source of frustration to many job applicants: Writing letters of recommendation, resumes, cover letters, and all the rest is often more challenging than any writing they have to do on the job! The jobs they applied for do not really require high skills in writing, but they had to have these skills anyway to get the job in the first place.

Candidates who write very well have an edge over those who don’t really have good writing skills, even though they’re the ones who are better qualified for the job. They can tell their story better, so they get more attention… and more opportunities.

Face it: writing skills are one of the most important skills there is. Certain skills will be required on the job, while other skills will be required to land the job in the first place Having both will give you an even bigger advantage to succeed in your career.

PROBLEM: What happens if you have a letter that was written specifically for one opportunity that is not well targeted for the next?

SOLUTION: Come up with a new one.

Most people think that a recommendation letter is a simple letter that starts with To Whom It May Concern. It’s a nice letter that tells of your strengths and you can recycle it and send it to any company, no matter what job you’re aiming for.

Those days are gone. Effective candidates tailor their pitches (if you will) to the opportunity at hand. With computer technology it is very easy to customize things, including letters of recommendation.

It’s easy enough, that’s why most people do it. You can bet that there are people out there who are competing with you who will tailor their message just as I’m describing. There’s only a relative few today, but it’s increasing by the day.

Why? Simple: it works. (You know how competition can make people do lots of crazy stuff!)
