Most people who took Spanish in HS or College are familiar with a Spanish dictionary. Over the years these books have become better. Now there are English to Spanish and Spanish to English translators easily available to everyone.
Google has a Spanish dictionary. It includes over a dozen languages. One of them is Spanish. It can translate anything from a single word to a whole document. They aren’t perfect but they’re better than nothing.
For years on the Internet AltaVista and its Babel Fish have the market cornered on translation. A Spanish dictionary was included. That means translations from English to Spanish and vice versa. One issue this site has is that translations brought back to the original language have changed. To some people this was a feature. It could be used to generate alternate versions of sentences or paragraphs. It also meant the translations weren’t very good.
The Spanish dictionary at Google is quite different. Going from English to Spanish and then back results in the same text. Although people who want to come up with alternate versions of a phrase or paragraphs are disappointed, people who want accurate translations are happy.
A Spanish dictionary doesn’t have to translate. Oxford’s Spanish dictionary translates, but also offers pronunciation keys and definitions of English and Spanish words. One word to try is water. That’s agua in Spanish. It’s an odd word in that it’s feminine, but becomes masculine when singular. Then the Oxford details many other words for water in different contexts. There’s a lot of detail.
Looking up mother in the Spanish dictionary brings us the Spanish madre. Mimar is the transitive form. This might be used in a sentence such as she mothers me. Langua materna is Spanish for mother tongue.
The Spanish dictionary has the word jacket. The clothing item is chaqueta in Spanish. But sobrecubierta is a book jacket.
