It also means knowing the field that they are tutoring in very well so that they are a competent authority on the subject. While tutors do not necessarily require any kind of teaching certificate, an ability to teach is very important. For a tutor to have the highest amount of success, and with that hopefully a high number of clients, he or she needs to have a tutoring style that is based on flexibility and change. Everyone learns at a different rate and so tutoring programs that do not deviate from their structure, and as such treat all students the same will ultimately fail, no matter how sound their concepts are. A good tutor will look at their students carefully and make adjustments to their plans to best meet the needs of their students.
Tutors are not so different from teachers, in that the great ones will always be said to inspire passion for learning. Even if lesson plans are well crafted in approach and delivery and are regularly adjusted to challenge students at the right level; to not encourage your students to become more proactive in their learning will limit production levels. This passion can be created by enthusiasm, by creative approaches with lesson material, or by regularly checking with and assisting your students to show how much you care about their progress.
A tutor can be an influential person in someone’s life, depending on how motivated they are. It doesn’t matter if they meet with students in person for after school tutoring or help people in different countries through an online tutoring center. What does matter is to research and know not only how to tutor effectively, but how to tutor specific students effectively. Add to that the ability to inspire others to work harder and this will equate to great success at tutoring.
